Terrible: Service & compatibility with Windows Vista August 21, 2010 trigger Read all the reviews about terrible service & support but decided to buy version 3 Spanish (Latin America) direct from Rosetta Stone anyway. I bought direct b/c otherwise your money-back guarantee is void. I received and tried to install on my laptop with Windows Vista. It did not recognize the CD so had contact customer service via an online chat session. Waited on hold for over 30 min, and then the Rep said this is a common problem with Vista. Went through a horse and pony show for another half hour. Could not fix. He finally said to turn off the computer with the CD in it and then restart, although we had to end our chat session (which scared me considering I was on hold forever). After the restart, it did recognize the CD but then put my computer through a loop of turning off and restarting over and over. I let the computer sit overnight and started it again in the morning, and all seems fine. I do not trust this software with Vista. The kinks should be worked out already if this is a known issue with Vista, especially when paying over $600 for the product. I uninstalled the software and will be calling for a return authorization tomorrow. I am now going to order Pimsleur, as I've heard great things about it and will save some money. I would NOT recommend Rosetta Stone, especially if you have Vista. I am not risking my computer with the software. What a headache.
Over Priced and Over Rated April 5, 2010 David (Chicago, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Honestly , I think this product is a complete rip off. It does a terrible job at gaining a working knowledge of the language. It just dumps arbitrary phrases and words on you and forces you repeat them or click on pretty pictures that match the word or phrase. But it doesn't actually translate the phrase or even guide you through an understanding of what you are translating. They just leave you to figure out on your own how the foreign language words map to the pictures.
The navigation of the software itself is terrible too. It's very difficult to tell where you are in the program.
Rosetta Stone has taken a very cookie cutter approach and fraudulently (IMO) markets and prices their product as best in class. The pretty pictures might make it worth a price tag of like $49 product but nowhere near the 10x that much that they charge.
I've learned more of the language just watching Telemundo and using free web translation tools out there than I did with this over hyped and over priced product.
Previous writer is right. Rosetta Stone sucks & is grossly overpriced. March 25, 2010 Stan Rocklin (Mesa, AZ USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The problem that I have with Rosetta Stone is that they are stupid. They have this TV commercial of this young lady who opens by asking, "Are you one of those people who think they can't learn a foreign language?" TWO GRAMMATICAL errors screech nails across a blackboard to me, an English teacher's son of 72 years of age. It should be, "Are you one of those people who THINKS ("one of those people" is singular stupid!) he or she (not THEY! Remember, we are talking about one person here) can't learn a foreign language?" So is that how they are going to teach me to speak a foreign language, in a way full of grammatical errors? So I phoned their 800 number and told the person about it and she thanked me. Did it change? No. So I wrote a letter to the CEO of Rosetta Stone on S. Lynn St. in Arlington, VA and no response. This shows that they have an axehole for a CEO and no wonder they screw up royally. I bought the Russian version to get my college Russian built up. They had NO phrases that would help me find the airport, the train station, a hotel, a good restaurant, etc.. What I found to say was, the boy stands under the (airplane) wing. Boy stands on table. Man and woman are dancing. Dog is brown. Cat is black. Rosetta Stone is run by a dolt and it sucks, yes!
Does not work with Vista March 16, 2010 J. Poleet Like other posters, I can't get the software to load properly on my Dell XPS 1330 with Vista Home Premium. I keep getting a fatal application error #5118. I have tried the fixes that Rosetta has on their website for this specific error, but it does not work.
I have spent all of this money, and I can't even use the software.
Good training, but incredibly poor customer service and support September 5, 2009 Jim (Maui, HI, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I just got off hours on the phone with Rosetta Stone... first in an Indian call center and later with customer service. I bought the product over a year ago and installed it on two computers at home -- one laptop and one desktop. The desktop died and there was no way to uninstall the software. The laptop worked fine and when I bought a new laptop I uninstalled it but forgot to "deactivate" it... actually I didn't forget, I just didn't know I was supposed to do that -- my bad, I guess.
So now I have my new laptop and I cannot install it on the new laptop as it says the activation isn't valid... I called waiting on hold and got India who told me they couldn't help me and that I had to talk to customer service... I called and waiting on hold for 26 minutes and got customer service who was decidedly unhelpful and said I'd have to talk to "activations" I explained that I'd already talked with them and they switched me to you... I asked them to just deactivate all my serial numbers at their server level so I could reinstall these products... they said they can't do that the only way is to deactivate them on the computer... I expalined that one computer is dead and the other was uninstalled.... but I'd reinstall it quickly if they'd hold on the line. They said they wouldn't do that but I kept her talking long enough to get the program reinstalled and sure enough the product was activated but refused to let me deactivate it. Buy the time we got done with our back and forth tech support had gone home for the weekend and they said I'd have to call back Tuesday because of the labor day weekend. Anyway, it was immesely frustrating and they didn't care. So in summary, it's a decent trainin program but for the money you pay for it the customer service and support is a terrible experience.
