4 out of 5 stars "Blackwater...$#!+ . I'm still only in Blackwater."   September 8, 2010
korova (Varosha)
"...Every time I think I'm gonna wake up back in the desert."

A man is given a task by the government against his will. A powerful man, who was formerly a popular leader but is now considered a criminal, must be eliminated. Getting close to the target will require a long, arduous journey to a highly fortified compound. The government must not be connected in any way to the mission. Sound familiar?

No, the target's name is not Kurtz in Red Dead Redemption. But it might as well be. Rockstar has once again taken inspiration from a masterpiece of cinema. In the same way that the Grand Theft Auto series is strongly linked to works by Singleton, Scorsese, De Palma, and Kurosawa, Red Dead Redemption pays homage to Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.

On the surface, RDR appears to be based on classic Westerns. The game is set in the American frontier at the beginning of the 20th century. There are plenty of references to films directed by John Ford, Sergio Leone, Clint Eastwood, and Sam Peckinpah. The driving forces behind the game's narrative, however, are questions about duty versus honor, confrontations with enemies who may not truly be opposed to what your character represents, and most importantly, the achievement of moral redemption by completing a psychologically harrowing journey. Western films often address these themes as well, of course, but without any ambiguity or ambivalence. It's always crystal clear who is good, who is evil, and what is right and what is wrong in these films. In contrast, RDR and AN deliberately obscure their moral viewpoint on the actions of their characters.

Anybody familiar with Apocalypse Now will recognize that many aspects of RDR's story are directly analogous to AN. While the characters and motivations of John Marston and Final Boss (no spoilers here) are never as fully developed as those of Captain Willard and Colonel Kurtz-due to both Rockstar's avoidance of Metal Gear Solid-length cutscenes and to the limitations of the videogame medium-all of AN's key plot points are present in the game. There's even a minor reference to the sniper execution scene in Full Metal Jacket that helps reinforce RDR's connections to AN. All of this adds up to a rich and compelling story arc, especially considering RDR is a videogame.

Story and influences aside, the bigger question is whether or not Red Dead Redemption is fun to play. The answer is YES. The graphics, especially the environmental effects, are outstanding. There's a good chance you will find yourself just sitting on a horse admiring a spectacular sunset or taking in the dramatic view from a mesa or hilltop and not doing anything else. The controls are easy to learn and quickly become intuitive. Finally, as is the norm with Rockstar, the game's universe is gigantic and full of missions, mini-games, and random encounters. A few minor things feel a bit unfinished, such as the missions set in Mexico that involve long journeys without characters saying anything, or unrefined (it's left to the player to figure out how the inventory management system works while playing) but there aren't any glaring flaws overall. Well worth picking up.

Read Dead Redemption

Read Dead Redemption is an awesome game, which you can spend countless hours playing, or goofing off and enjoying yourself. Although the plot is somewhat short, It's a game that you'll enjoy time after time again. I recommended this to someone who likes games that you can do anything in, spend countless hours playing.

1 out of 5 stars Rockstar fan but this is horrible   September 7, 2010
Michael B. Barker (Greer, Az)
Look, I loved all the GTA games and was really looking forward to RDR. What a disappointment. It takes forever to ride the horse from one action location to another. It is just too slow moving to keep my interest. I really tried to like this game but finally had to just shelve it and replay some old ones. Just wondering--are the glowing reviews real or are they written by employees of Rockstar whose managers realize they have huge dud on their hands? Especially the ones that say crap like, "this is the best game I have ever played!" or "This is the best game Rockstar ever made!" After playing the game, I wonder, what game are you dudes talking about?

5 out of 5 stars A western epic unlike any other in gaming   September 6, 2010

After completing Red Dead Redemption (RDR) and receiving 100% completion game stat, I am left awestruck to the brilliance of this epic western title. Rock_Star literally nailed it with RDR in regards to details, visuals, voice acting, & storyline. Rarely does a video game come out with so much detail like RDR. Prior to playing RDR, I was not a big fan of the western genre. However, giving the incredible rave reviews in which RDR has gotten, I decided to make the purchase. I can say wholeheartedly that I did not regret purchasing this game as I was literally hooked to RDR the minute I started playing. Somehow, Rock_Star was able to put so much details into RDR that you actually feel that you are somewhere in the Southwest portion of the United States or in Mexico.

As I said before, the details of this game is ridiculous. The facial animations, open world settings, character interactions, and limitless action will leave you feeling like you've gone through an adventure of a lifetime. RDR is a very long game. So much to do and see, it will take an individual plenty of hours to accomplish everything in RDR. Anyone feeling hesitant in buying this game should not worry no more as RDR will simply give you one of the best gaming experiences ever. I can say that RDR is definitely one of my top five games of all time. It took Rock_Star five years to make RDR from start to finish and it shows big time. The effort in which the team at Rock_Star took to make RDR is incredible. I can only imagine the amount of hours that was put in to make this game.

Amid the minor glitches found in this title, Red Dead Redemption will give anyone an experience like no other with regards to open world games. RDR has elevated the standard of sandbox games and can be summed up with one word...phenomenal!!
