GREAT YOGURT MAKER!!!! ........BUT....... October 30, 2009 J. Peterson 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this yogurt maker about a year ago as a gift for my folks. They love it! The problem is, now, a year later, I'm looking at it again and thinking I may get one for myself.
I start looking at yogurt makers and think, "This is a pretty nice looking one. Hmmm....it looks ALOT like the one I bought a year ago for my folks." So, when I go to look at it, a note pops up and confirms exactly what I had been thinking.
Ok, so I'm all about capitalism and whatnot, but the same supplier is now selling a yogurt maker that I bought on Nov 30, 2008 for more than ten times the price on Oct 30, 2009. Sorry, but I don't think so!
Apparently this yogurt maker has been discontinued now. Perhaps this is why the seller feels it/he/she/they can now charge the prices they do. If you read some of the one star reviews there is mention of BPH concerns (due to the plastic container). This may or may not be relative to you.
As you can see, this product has many great reviews.
I just figured I'd throw my "two-cents" out there about the ridiculous price.
On a side note: My dad found some glass jars that he could use for the same unit. This way, he could have a batch in the fridge and another one "on the go". If BPH is a concern and you still want to throw $200 out there for this thing, it's another option.
GO CAPITALISM!!
Does what you ask it to October 21, 2009 azreads (Maine) Wow, after seeing the 'new' price, I'd wished I'd bought ten of these (I did purchase two, the second by mistake but now I am thankful. I bought this last winter. It is easy to make yogurt using this. I use Ultrapasteurized milk and I use it from the carton (I read that in a review here and tried it and have continued to do it this way), I use yogurt for starter, and either add a little nonfat half and half (again Ultrapasteurized) or non-fat dry milk. If I want to thicken it more for a more greek style yogurt, I strain it in a colander lined with coffee filters for about an additional hour. Would I pay the current price...NO WAY. There has to be another similar machine that does this same thing. Basically it works like a crockpot but the temperature is set at I believe 110 degrees. This isn't rocket science...I am surprised this product was discontinued and now has become a commodity. Shop around and see if you can find something similar. I would make sure that you can find a yogurt maker that can make a quart at a time. Makes life so much easier. I would have given it five stars but this price hike is nuts!
Disappointed with this yogurt maker September 26, 2009 AnnPatricia (Texas) I purchased the Salton YM9 based on the many good customer reviews. I've made my own yogurt for years, most recently using another Salton product - a 5-jar unit found at a thrift store several years ago - which worked very well. The YM9 was purchased not quite a year ago to replace the 5-jar unit, thinking it would be simpler to use one rather than 5 containers. I found that the YM9 gets so hot that it curdles the yogurt, rather than producing a smooth, consistently set yogurt. Trying it with a Mason jar instead of the plastic insert didn't make a difference; neither did using several different combinations of milk/yogurt starters, and trying to fine tune the incubation time. Possibly I just got a lemon; I finally put the YM9 away and am again using the 5-jar unit, and getting perfect results again.
Excellent simple Yogurt Maker September 19, 2009 R. M. Wallis (Mystic, CT, USA) Want to make your own yogurt? We did! So ours isn't loaded with sugar or high fructose corn syrup or similar . . . let's be polite . . . gloop! This is a complete doddle to use. Once made you do need to filter off the excess fluid - we use a coffee filter - but this takes only a few minutes and the yogurt is delicious. Add your own chopped fruit, muesli or granola, vanilla or honey and you have a perfect breakfast or any time snack - great for dieters too! Enjoy!
Loved it till it started overheating September 17, 2009 Gretchen Hunter (Medford, OR) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
On the plus side, I liked that I could use a 1-qt glass canning jar instead of the plastic container it came with. On the negative side, after a couple of years it started overheating enough to not fully "yog" anymore. It took me a long time to figure out that was what was going wrong, and by the time I did it was past the warranty. Another review mentioned the same problem. It was an expensive lesson, and I won't buy another Salton product.
